Preparing to apply for a tutoring job

Tuesday, March 25th, 2014

We get lots of enquiries from people who’d like to tutor for 121 Home Tutors. We’re always here to offer help and advice – the first question we often hear is ‘what information will you need’. So here’s a quick breakdown of the information you’ll need to get together before you apply.

  1. We’ll need information on your work and educational background – we’ll be looking to see if you have the appropriate tutoring or work related experience (but don’t worry if you haven’t tutored before, that doesn’t mean we won’t take you on).
  2. We’ll want references from companies you have worked for or people you have tutored.
  3. We’ll be looking for evidence that you understand what tutoring involves and how you’d approach a tutoring job. We’ll also want to know you love your subject area and can pass that enthusiasm onto a student.
  4. We’ll need proof of ID and evidence that you can work in the UK, plus a valid DBS (or be willing to apply for a DBS – previously known as a CRB).
  5. Finally we’ll need to know where you live and where you’d be willing to travel to (we cover Manchester and Cheshire).

So that’s our top tips. Still interested in tutoring – you can find out more information and apply on our website.

CEM test instead of 11+

Monday, March 17th, 2014

If your child is going to sit the 11+ (11 plus) in the next few months or next year you might have heard about changes to the testing.  Over the last couple of years there have been calls to stop the 11 plus because some people think it favours children whose parents can afford tutoring.

At Durham University the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring has been commissioned to design this new test for grammar school entry (currently known as the CEM 11+).  Although the tests vary by region and school there are a number of similarities.

The test makes a number of changes to the existing 11 plus including less focus on non-verbal reasoning. You can read about the differences in detail here.

It is likely that many children will still need help in preparing for entrance exams and 11+, often the issues are to do with confidence and subject knowledge rather than a particular ‘testing style’.

If you’d like to know more about CEM style or 11 plus testing then call 121 Home Tutors today. We specialise in helping students pass entrance exams for Manchester and Cheshire grammar schools.
