How much work can a tutor expect once they have registered with 121 Home Tutors?

As each subject and geographic area is subject to different factors, predictions can be misleading. There are however, some tutors we are able to offer more assignments to than others. Reasons can be due to a combination of factors:

  1. The subject(s) you can offer (some subjects are requested more frequently - eg entrance test/11+ preparation; GCSE core curriculum subjects such as maths, science, English).
  2. The geographic area you live and/or could travel to give tuition - those tutors who can travel to tutees get more work than those who just offer tuition at their own home. The more flexible you are with location the better.
  3. Your availability - most tuition is required after school hours and at weekends.
  4. The professional way in which you conduct the assignments, leading to recommendations from clients and from 1-2-1 Home Tutors itself.
  5. Your reliability and promptness in;
    1. Contacting potential tutees - often tutees take on the first tutor who contacts them
    2. Letting us know the outcome of a recommendation - so we know if the potential tutee was of interest/what you were looking for, if the fee was acceptable to you etc.

Do I have to be a teacher?

No. While many of our tutors are teachers and/or teacher trained not all are tutors are. We review each application on its own merit. We do however say that, as a general guide, in the subject(s) you want to tutor you must be qualified to at least the level above the highest level you want to tutor. For example if you wanted to tutor GCSE Spanish then a minimum qualification would be an Alevel in Spanish

Can I tutor more than one subject?

Yes, as long as you reach the minimum qualification level for each subject. Some subjects do in fact complement each other very well. For example we have several maths tutors that also offer science tuition

What subjects do you need tutors for?

As above the answer depends on several factors but some subject tutors get much more work than others. Around South Manchester, Cheshire especially there is a high demand for entrance test  and 11+ preparation and we can usually send lots of work to a specialist 11+ tutor and/or entrance test tutor. Maths tutors, Science tutors, English tutors, tend to get lots of enquiries. There is also a reasonable demand for French and German language tutors; last year we had numerous enquiries for Spanish tuition but not enough tutors! We would therefore very much welcome applications from Spanish tutors.

Last year we had a high demand for business studies tutors and would similarly encourage applications from tutors that can offer business studies and similar

(note past demand is not necessarily an indicator of future demand and we can never guarantee demand).

What fees will I receive?

This depends on several things including your experience, your expertise, the subject and level you tutor at - for example degree level tuition commands a higher fee than primary level - whether you travel to the tutee or the tutee travels to you.

Does it cost me anything to join as a tutor?

No - we take a commission for work we pass your way
