Learning is not just about having the subject knowledge; sometimes there are barriers to learning that prevent a student achieving their full potential. It could be that there is low self-esteem or there is a lack of confidence, or even no confidence, or maybe a fear of 'being wrong' or 'making a fool of myself' etc. Or, it could be that no-one has ever been taught 'how to learn'; the learning style that works best, ways to revise effectively etc. Is there a lack of concentration? Are you or your child very easily distracted and so find it difficult to take in information or concentrate for long enough? Is there is a lack of direction and so a lack of motivation to study? These, and many others are barriers to learning. But don't worry - a few, sometimes even 1 or 2, tutoring sessions with a specialist tutor can help. Find out more>>

Young people don't often understand why they experience the emotions they do and may be unsure of what they want to do in life, or where they are heading and why. They may have low self-esteem and lack confidence and lack belief in themselves and probably don't know how to manage their emotions. All these emotions and issues can have a profound effect on learning and a result these students don't get the chance to develop their unique skills and talents and so reach their full potential. In some cases this may lead to the child becoming disruptive or even to truant.
Tuition sessions with our specialist tutors can help these students build self-esteem and confidence using simple, fun and interactive methods that let pupils and students develop an understanding and appreciation of themselves and those around them and help them learn to manage emotions as well as express them.
Most young people have desires and dreams and for many these don't become a reality simply because no one takes them seriously or gives them the encouragement to follow their dreams, or has confidence in their ability to succeed. These students then oten lose confidence in themselves. With a little extra tutoring help a few sessions with a tutor can help these students learn about themselves and help them follow their dreams. For a relatively small investment, the earning potential later in life can be hugely improved, making tutoring a great return on investment.
What about those students that, unfortunately, experience bullying or for other reasons find school a stressful place? Confidence and motivation is knocked and the student may feel less worthy and as a result learning may suffer, which could have a profound effect on later life. Our tutors, in a few sessions, can help these students learn how deal with their challenges and give them new inspiration, direction and hope.
For many different reasons, many students do not achieve their full potential: for whatever reason there is a barrier to learning. This may not be something that with a 'label', for example, being dyslexic but something very individual and personal to the learner. They could simply not be told enough times that "you can do it" or not receive the praise or attention they personally need: either way its a barrier to learning and this barrier needs to be overcome.
In some respects, having a 'label' to a learning barrier is good as it means that help can be directed, and that often there are set 'procedures' or 'provisions' to help. For example a student with dyslexia will usually be given extra time in exams to compensate.
But what about those students without a label? Some students simply don't know how to learn effectively, or they don't know how to revise or how to study. These students often fail to reach their full potential in exam or test situations.
How many times have you seen a school report that says your child is understands the topics, does well in homework, is confident and able in class but when it comes to exams and tests doesn't perform well at all??
A few tutoring sessions with a specialist learning tutor can help students achieve their full potential
There are also those students that lack confidence, have low self esteem or lack the motivation to learn or to study. Similarly there are students who don't have direction or know what they want to do and so have no incentive or motivation to learn. A few tutoring sessions with a specialist learning tutor can help these students enormously.
Students so often get compared to their peers, or asked questions in class as part of a general 'ask the class' question and answer scenario, that they cannot answer fast enough, or answer at all. This makes the student feel 'stupid' and often completely knocks their confidence. Everyone is different, everyone learns in a different way.
One teaching method therefore can't suit all: one teacher, several students, in a class situation, some students will understand what's being taught, others won't. Often the teacher will inadvertently be de-motivating the student and knocking their confidence becuse they just can't see WHY the student isn't understanding.
At 1-2-1 Home Tutors, we know that 'how we learn' is as important to understand as 'what' we are trying to learn. A student that is predominantly an 'auditory' learner is less likely to learn through reading. By knowing 'how we learn' and knowing what motivates us to learn gives students the confidence to learn. Fortunately there are specialist 'coaching' tutors available to help, and if you are not sure which type of coaching is for you, then why not try our taster workshops? Please find me a tutor >>
So many students go to pieces in exams but did you know there are tutors that, in only a few sessions, can help get to the reasons why exams and tests cause a problem and provide strategies to overcome the problems?
The very thought of an exam or test can bring about panic, fear and stress and as a result the student is under performing in exams and so not demonstrating their full potential. Very often there is a deep rooted cause, often something forgotten about or apparently insignificant, that makes the student fear exams and become scared of exams and stressed and in a panic about the exam. Achieving best performance in an exam situation is helped by being comfortable and relaxed in the exam / test hall.
Fortunately, our specialist tutors can help you with this and help you to overcome the fear of exams and remove the exam stress or test fears and find out the cause of you under performing in exams. Please find me a tutor >>

These techniques can also turn a good student into an excellent student, improving all aspects of learning and performance at school, in life and in all you do! Our specialist learning tutors also run taster workshops
At 1-2-1 Home Tutors we don't discriminate on ability and can introduce you to experienced specialist tutors for help with dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADD, ADHD etc. For example, it could be that for students diagnosed with learning 'disabilities', especially dyslexia, NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) is the best route.
Working face-to-face can be a very productive way to learn and our tutors will work closely with both child and parents/carers to identify areas that need improvement, compiling a structured course of tuition to suit. This programme will be continually assessed and can be modified according to the changing individual needs of the learner. Please find me a tutor >>
Not sure how this 'specialist coaching tuition' will benefit or help? Why not try our workshops? Our specialist tutors run regular workshops that are very useful as taster sessions so that you can see what techniques and strategies are available to help with and identify the barriers to learning and also to see how helpful they are. The workshops are fun and interactive, though places are limited to max 15 per session. For more information on our workshops>>
