Returning to education as an adult? We are constantly learning new skills and outside of compulsory education adults take on learning voluntarily; many adults return to more formal education to sit formal exams, others take on eg a language for pleasure or business purposes. Some of our clients are adult learners wanting to return to study for GCSE, A level (now split into AS and A2 level), diplomas or degrees or simply wanting to improve their chances of promotion at work by brushing up, for example, their maths and English skills. Others have always had a desire to obtain a qualification and without the pressure of learning being compulsory find taking on a subject enjoyable.
While our tutors can offer personal, private tuition to adults for the whole range of academic subjects, we often find adult learning is about brushing up on Maths and English, to maybe sit a numeracy or literacy test for a new job or promotion, or for Statistics, Business English (report writing skills and similar), French, German and other languages for business travel or holiday travel or relocation. We also find adults come for help with CV writing, job applications, career guidance and presentation skills. Please find me an tutor >>
Students take AS exams in year 12 and then can either continue with the same subjects for a further year at A2 in year 13 or choose different subjects to study at AS. Most students will continue to A2 with the subjects, as they have opted for subjects they enjoy and/or are good at. AS, A2 & A level grades (AS + A2 are equivalent to an A level) are used to determine university entrance.
Our tutors can offer personal, private tuition for both AS and A2 Maths (and Statistics), science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, combined science, PE), English (English Language and English Literature), French, German, History, Music, business studies & more. Please find me an A level tutor >>

Tutoring from business professionals about developing your business or how to set up in business (learn what's required, eg bookkeeping, keeping accounts)
Grammar Schools and private / public schools, set slightly different assessment tests but most are based around a common format of Maths, English and Verbal Reasoning, with possibly science, languages, history and geography for entry at age 13. Please find me an entrance exam tutor >>
Despite pupils' young ages, prepschools often want children (age 6 or 7) to come to the school to take a written test (usually in January) in the year before entry.
At this level a nurturing approach is vital and our tutors are sensitive to the needs of young learners, building confidence and ensuring the required English, Maths (including verbal and non verbal reasoning) standards are met.
Local independent (private) schools often set their own entrance test, usually sat around Christmas of year 6, for admission into year 7 at age 11+ or year 9 at 13+. At 11, the exam tends to be limited to Maths, English and verbal reasoning. At 13 the entrance exam tends to include a wider range of subjects including compulsory English, Maths, Science, History, Geography and Religious Education. Optional papers are available in four foreign languages and Latin may be a requirement. Please find me an entrance exam tutor >>
State run selective Grammar Schools, especially around the Trafford Borough of Manchester, tend to use the eleven plus (11+) NFER exam to selcet pupils for entry into year 7 and test Maths and Verbal Reasoning and English (though the English test tends to be considered only for borderline cases in some schools). The 11+ test is very similar to the entrance tests used by the private schools and is usually sat in the autumn/winter (between mid-September - January depending on the school) of year 6. Please find me an 11+ tutor >>
Common Entrance exams for independent public schools can be set for admission ages of 11+ or 13+ and although marked by the schools themselves, exam papers are often set by the Independent School Exam Board.
At 11, the exam tends to be limited to Maths, English and verbal reasoning whereas the 13+ exam includes a wider range of subjects including compulsory English, Maths, Science, History, Geography and Religious Education. Optional papers are available in four foreign languages and Latin may be a requirement.
GCSE courses are generally 2 years long and begin in year 10. Some subjects (eg Maths & Science) come with an option to take units as modules at different times throughout the 2-year period so some students sit their 'real' GCSE exams beginning early in year 10 (sittings are in November, January, March and June, dependent on course followed) - the modular route gives students opportunities to resit modules to improve on grades, if appropriate. Most GCSEs involve a practical/coursework type aspect, but testing is mainly by exam - multiple choice or short answer options are available for most subjects. Languages involve an oral exam.
There are several exam boards (eg AQA, Edexcel, OCR) and within each exam board variations on syllabuses - all are based on a national curriculum and so are very similar. The exam board, syllabus and style of assessment route is decided by the school/teachers and it is often worth finding out the exact course being followed at the beginning of year 10 (see our links page to the exam boards for useful information and past papers).
Our tutors can offer personal, private tuition for GCSE Maths (and Statistics), science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, combined science, PE), English (English Language and English Literature), French, German, History, Music, business studies & more

Higher education offers a vast choice of vocational and academic courses leading to a degree or diploma. Course length at undergraduate (1st degree - Bachelor's degrees) level varies but is on average 3 years. Postgraduate students can continue their studies at Masters level or eg PhD. Learning style is less formal, compared with school/college and often self-directed. Teaching styles vary per course/ university.
From year 7-9 students follow a national curriculum of core subjects as they aim towards KS3. KS3 SATs are usually sat by students at state run schools - independent (private) schools often don't work towards, or have their pupils sit, the KS3 SATs. By the end of year 9, pupils choose options to be added to the core subjects to start the 2 year GCSE courses. Please find me a tutor >>
Primary School students sit KS1 SATs at the end of year 1 (May) and then KS2 SATs at the end of their primary schooling in year 6 (May) to see how they have progressed through their primary learning. Many schools use SAT-style test at the end of each academic year to assess performance.
Preparation for assessment tests for example onto corporate training programs MBA's etc. Language skills for business, computer skills and more - see subjects
Standard Assessment Tasks (SATs) formally take place at the end of Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 and cover the three main subjects of English, Maths and Science. For Key Stage 1 (year 2), they take place around Easter time, and for Key Stages 2 and 3 (years 6 and 9), they are usually in May.
As a gauge of future performance, a child's KS1 results can give early signs of educational difficulties. KS2 results are often used by secondary schools for setting the new year 7 intake classes. KS3 results are for setting year 10 (GCSE) classes. Please find me a SATs tutor >>
Gifted children at the most able end of the spectrum may be suitable for a scholarship award - the exam is usually a more challenging version of the Common Entrance Exam. Those passing will be eligible for a reduction in school fees, so private tutoring may prove to be a very cost-effective investment.
Everyone is unique and we all have different attitudes, interests, styles and desires when it comes to learning. At 1-2-1 Home Tutors in South Manchester and Cheshire we recognise that some struggle with learning more than others and possibly need different strategies to help them with learning. Some students have been formally 'labelled' with Special Needs, eg dyslexia, ADHD, others struggle but unfortunately don't have a learning 'difficulty' that warrants a 'label' and that opens up avenues for extra support.
