Do You Really Need to Learn a New Language?

I don’t need to learn a new language, do I? Everyone speaks English, right? Wrong!

Although it’s the most widely spoken (and universally understood) language on the planet – followed by Chinese (Mandarin) – we can’t assume that everyone uses it. They don’t.

You’ll know if you’ve ever holidayed in France and Spain, that many proud Europeans prefer to speak their own lingo – especially in rural areas.

So if you intend to travel, learning a new language – even just everyday phrases to start with – can totally transform that experience.

On top of this, you can boost your career prospects if you are fluent in several languages. It’s something we’ve blogged about before!

Which language is worth learning then?

As Statista states, the top five widely spoken languages are:

  1. English
  2. Mandarin
  3. Hindi
  4. Spanish
  5. French

This tells us quite a story: that European and Asian languages are hotly sought after.

Think about it. China is a major economy on the international stage. That’s why you can learn Mandarin in many more schools than ever before.

And it’s why many businesses invest in language training so staff can be fluent in Mandarin…

Should you opt to be an entrepreneur one day, a foreign language can open doors, increase wealth and help you access a huge market.

Plus, because it’s one of the most complex languages to learn, those who can speak it always get noticed.

Hola! But don’t Europeans speak English too?

French and Spanish are unbelievably useful languages to learn. For starters, French is one of the most widely spoken languages across all five continents.

Did you know that Canada’s official languages are both English and French? Handy!

And if you hanker after working in an international organisation or presenting Eurovision one day (!!!), French is a must-have language. Voila!

As for Spanish, it is the official language in over 20 countries. Olé!
