Exam mistakes. Do you know what they are and how to fix them?

1. Skim-Reading the Question

The Mistake: Answering the question you wish was on the paper, rather than the one actually in front of you.

The Fix: Take a breath. Grab a highlighter and mark the specific command words (e.g., “Describe,” “Compare,” “Evaluate”). Answer exactly what is asked.
2. Trashing Your Timeline

The Mistake: Spending 15 minutes agonising over a 2-mark maths equation means you don’t leave enough time for the tougher, higher-mark questions later. Or wasting time on the earlier low markers at the expense of the higher -mark Qs in your English papers.

The Fix: Work out a rough “minute-per-mark” rule before you start. If you get stuck, move on and come back to it later.
3. Leaving Blanks – an Exam Mistake You can’t Afford

The Mistake: Skipping a difficult question completely because you don’t know the final answer.

The Fix: Never leave a blank space! In subjects like Maths and Science, examiners award “method marks” just for writing down the correct formula or starting the calculation. Guessing is always better than nothing.
4. Passive Cramming

The Mistake: Just staring at a textbook the night before, hoping the information magically absorbs into your brain.

The Fix: Stop reading and start testing. Use active recall. Doing a single past paper under timed conditions is infinitely more valuable than reading three chapters of a revision guide the night before.
5. Ignoring the Mark Allocation

The Mistake: Writing a brilliant, highly detailed paragraph for a question only worth 2 marks.

The Fix: Look at the number in the brackets! If a question is worth 2 marks, make two quick, clear points and move immediately to the next question.
