Your 48-Hour Exam Survival Guide

Exam survival support

Exam season is here, and if you’re staring down the barrel of GCSEs or A-Levels with a knot of panic in your stomach, you’re not alone.

The good news? You don’t need a time machine. What you need is a game plan for the final 48 hours.

Forget all-nighters that leave you brain-dead; it’s time for smart, targeted preparation. Let’s do it!

1. The “Breathe and Recalibrate” Strategy

Your brain is probably running on fumes by now. The first step is to calm any panic.

  • The 5-4-3-2-1 method: Ground yourself in the present. Name 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste. This literally resets your nervous system.

  • Breathe in, breathe out: Breathe in deeply for five seconds, hold your breath for 5 seconds, then breathe out for 5. It works!
  • Light exercise: A brisk 20-minute walk or run can clear your head, boost your mood, and improve memory recall. Fresh air is your best friend.

2. The “Smart Cram” Approach

Exam survival techniques rely on targeted approaches, not panicky ones.

Forget trying to learn new topics, OK? You ALWAYS know more than you think.

Instead, the last 48 hours are about reinforcing what you already know and mastering exam technique.

  • Past papers are gold: Focus on doing at least two full past papers under timed conditions.

  • Mark schemes are your map: After each paper, compare your answers to the examiner’s mark scheme. Identify exactly where you lost marks – was it a missed quote? An unanalysed technique?

  • Target a key weakness: Spend your remaining time drilling the specific topics you struggled with in the past papers, rather than blindly re-reading entire chapters.

3. Fuel your brain

Your brain needs premium fuel, not junk food.

  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water. Did you know that dehydration kills concentration?

  • Nosh on brain food: Opt for complex carbohydrates (whole grains, vegetables) and lean protein. Avoid sugary snacks that cause energy crashes.

4. Get some sleep

Pulling an all-nighter is the worst possible strategy. Your brain consolidates information while you sleep. So:

  • Aim for 7-8 hours: Even if you feel anxious, try to get a full night’s rest before the exam. It will dramatically improve your focus and memory recall the next morning.

The final 48 hours are about sharpening your exam skills, not cramming your brain. Stay calm, stay strategic, and remember: you’ve got this.
