The Trafford Grammar School Consortium is officially changing its exam board – moving away from GL Assessment and partnering with Future Stories Community Enterprise (FSCE).

What is the FSCE Exam?
Historically, Manchester grammar schools have relied heavily on abstract reasoning papers, which are not usually covered by the KS2 curriculum.
Instead, the new FSCE approach promises to be different.
The new papers will strictly assess your child’s grasp of the national Key Stage 2 English and Maths curriculum.
This is actually part of a growing national trend to:

Which 11+ Grammar Schools are Affected?
The Trafford Grammar School Consortium runs a unified admissions process. This means your child only needs to sit one joint assessment to be eligible for all five participating schools:
- Altrincham Grammar School for Boys
- Altrincham Grammar School for Girls
- Sale Grammar School
- Stretford Grammar School
- Urmston Grammar School
Just keep in mind that Loreto Grammar School and Saint Ambrose College remain independent from this group, so they will both continue to run their own specific entrance exams.
How Might 11+ Exam Changes Impact Your Child?
These changes are to be rolled out gradually. Here is everything you need to know!
- 2027 Entry (Testing this coming September 2026): Nothing changes. If your child is sitting the exam this autumn, they will still take the traditional GL assessment. Make sure, then, that you continue your current preparation.
- For 2028 Entry (Testing in Autumn 2027): This is when the FSCE format officially begins. The test remains at the start of Year 6, but the content will shift exclusively to Key Stage 2 Maths and English.
- 2029 Entry and Beyond (Testing from Summer 2028): From this point onward, the FSCE exam will move earlier in the academic calendar. Children will sit the paper in the latter half of the Year 5 summer term. This aims to free up your child’s six-week summer holiday so they can rest and recharge before their final year of primary school begins!
