How to pass 11 Plus exams part I

master maths

Are your 11 Plus exams looming? Unsure how to make the most of the time you have left?

Luckily, you’re in the right place. Our 121 private tutors help scores of students pass their entrance exams with flying colours every year.

Because subjects tend to be English, Maths Verbal and Non Verbal Reasoning, we’ll initially share answers to some of the most commonly asked questions. Here goes:

How can I improve vocabulary for 11 Plus exams?

  • Practise synonyms and antonyms for every new word you discover.
  • Use a thesaurus or Word Hippo to find some fabulous words! Keep lists to broaden your knowledge.
  • Use new words in a sentence to help remember them.
  • READ READ READ! Everything from classics to gothic and detective fiction. Read extracts from books too to practise analysing setting, characters and plot.

How can I answer Maths questions faster?

  • Work out what’s holding you up. First, do a practice paper at a steady pace – not initially against the clock. Then note the questions you do well, and which ones slow you down. This will identify which skills you need to brush up on.
  • Practise core skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Knowing your Times Tables is crucial! Check out this excellent site for Maths games.
  • Break questions down into small chunks. Most questions have a sequence to getting to the right answer. Which steps do you stumble on? Once you know this, you know what to spend time on.
  • Once you feel more confident about your core skills, then try a timed practice paper to whittle down which skills still need focus.
