Academic career routes such as A Levels don’t suit everyone. If you know what you want to do already and fancy pursuing a practical course equivalent to three A Levels, then a T Level could be right up your street.

T Levels are technical qualifications which blend in-class study with work experience. Launched to 16-19 year-olds in September 2020, they promise to offer you more opportunities to build your career skills fast!

What vocational training is currently on offer?

While some providers are launching in 2021 due to Covid, the Government is planning to open up T Levels to adults as well as teenagers from 2023. Interestingly, the take-up for these new courses in Construction, Digital, and Education & Childcare, has been slow to get going.

That said, loads more options are opening up from September 2021 in careers such as Health, Science and Engineering. From Sept 2022, subjects such as Finance and Accounting will be available.

As with every new educational route which takes you away from traditional qualifications, it can take a while for the word to get out there. But if you are in year 9 or 10 now, it’s worth finding out about these opportunities before you get to Year 11.

• Yes, if you want to experience the world of work in real-life work placements
• Yes, if you want to move into skilled employment while achieving recognised qualifications
• Yes, if you still want to pursue a degree at University as T Levels offer UCAS points

How many GCSEs do I need to start?

Generally speaking, you need five GCSEs to get onto a T Level course.
