Are Learning Gaps Damaging Your Child’s Future?

No other phenomena in the last decade has affected learning more than Covid – the worldwide Pandemic that’s left a bitter legacy.

Shutting school gates to hundreds of thousands of students in 2020 caused an inevitable surge of learning problems.

From technical issues that limited access to online learning to being struck down by Covid itself, our children have been playing catch-up ever since.

Being behind on knowledge and skills can impact in all sorts of ways.. Let’s look at some.

Learning Gaps in Primary Schools

A child’s formative years lays the foundations for a bright future. Any interruption to that can put several spanners in the works.

  • Reports concluded that 70% of school leaders reported children losing up to a year of learning, despite the sterling work put in by teachers across the land.
  • Year 4 and 3 students today might struggle as they would have missed out on a host of reading and writing skills as well as early development when reception classes shut up shop.
  • The truth is that every year group has been affected – including students in year 4 at the time who are now in senior school.
  • Because curriculums are designed to build on last year’s work, it means that 1000’s of youngsters are missing vital skills.

Year 9 to 11 Secondary School Strugglers

Here at 1-2-1 Home Tutors, we’ve noticed a large proportion of students facing GCSEs with serious gaps in their learning.

It’s a real worry as the GCSE years are high-intensity and packed up with a host of subjects to juggle.

  • When a teenager isn’t ready or has gaps, it can make the whole process even harder and – in some cases – hugely stressful.
  • In fact, anxiety can be so serious that some drop out of the school system altogether. What a tragedy that is…
  • Students ill-prepared for GCSEs notoriously don’t achieve their true potential as catching up is such a tall order without help.

How to Plug the Skills Gap

One of the best ways to get your child back on track is some early intervention focused on plugging those gaps.

Main aims to go for are to:

  • Develop confidence
  • Boost resilience
  • Encourage a healthy attitude to failing
  • Target specific skills to build up knowledge
