- Humanities. Do these subjects really matter?
- What difference can studying such subjects make?
- First off, what is a Humanity subject?
Humanities … at GCSE
Aside from some schools that teach GCSE Humanities as a single qualification – combining several subjects – many schools offer:
- History
- Geography
- Sociology
- Psychology
- Classical Studies
Plus English and Religious Studies are compulsory, of course.
Let’s think why they matter?
Studying Humanity
When you study a subject in humanities, you stand to gain endless, much-needed skills such as how to:
- Understand people
- Think critically and analyse
- Understand about today’s threats such as global warming
- Sift through a wealth of information to find the truth
- Build a critical eye about the world, people, societies
- Develop academic and emotional perspective
- Appreciate diversity and celebrate differences
Let’s face it: the world is full of fury with strong authoritarian voices shouting the loudest.
And with fake news and political corruption on the rise, broadening your understanding of the world and how people tick is of immense value.
In fact, character-building skills like these are much sought-after in the workplace. Can you afford not to consider studying humanities?
History … Does it Really Matter?
Absolutely, YES!
Understanding the past can help solve tomorrow’s problems today.
Philosopher George Santayana famously said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
With current politicians repeating past mistakes, you can be part of the future generation who build a better world. Studying humanities lets you do just that.
And as we explored in a previous post, History qualifications themselves offer oodles of career paths. Check it out here.
Humanities … Have your Voice Heard
Public speaking is essential to your personal and academic success.
- Being able to listen
- Speak your truth
- Stand your ground
- Debate intelligently
.. are all essential life skills that you can use to make yourself heard in a world full of noise.
From History, English and Religious Studies to Sociology and Psychology, being able to converse and debate are essential tools that you need.
Never let anyone tell you that thinking is obsolete. Thinkers can and do change the world!
